What does PAN do?

PAN Raises Money

In 2004, PAN more doubled the amount of funds raised for organizations from 3 million dollars to over $6.7 million.

PAN Activates Members

A recent campaign to increase email addresses collected has doubled the number. Some offices average 9 or more per canvasser per shift.

PAN Expands

  • NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota, after a successful summer office in 2004, has now reopened as a full-time office.
  • This Spring PAN opened a field canvass in Portland for Working America. They recently won a contest among all Working America canvass offices increasing the number of emails, members, and funds produced.
  • Developed a dozen senior canvass staff with Minnesota Clean Water Action Alliance who now perform contract membership development work for affiliated organizations.
  • Opened two new field canvasses for Clean Water Action Alliance in neighboring states; one in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and another in Lacrosse, Wisconsin.

PAN Builds the Profession of the Canvass

  • Our staff development work is recognized throughout the progressive movement: Since the formation of PAN, we have had 100% retention of our Canvass Director team. This is impressive in any line of work. Our staff changes have come from our ability to grow and promote individuals to new positions.
  • Promotion from within and without: PAN has traditionally promoted from within. All Managers and Directors have experience as canvassers. Recently we have successfully increased the number of Staff Directors by recruiting people from other fields who have valuable experience to bring to PAN.
  • Creating a new generation of talented activists: In 2004 we initiated a new training conference for staff interested in pursuing Director positions. In 2005, we doubled the number of staff attending; 60 staff met in Madison to learn supervisory skills.
  • Our alumni: While we concentrate on developing long-term commitments to the canvass, we also cultivate interest and know-how for organizing. Individuals who developed through our canvass offices have applied their knowledge learned there and gone on to notable careers building organizations. To name a few PAN alumni: Larry Marx, Director of the Proteus Foundation, Betty Ahrens, Co-Director of Iowa Citizen Action Network, Leeann Hall, Director of Northwest Federation of Community Organizations, Andy Fellows, Chesapeake Program Director for Clean Water Action.

PAN Provides Technical Capability

  • PAN is developing a new database, due to come on line in 2006. It will increase the ability of organizations to communicate with and activate their members.
  • PAN’s National Membership Administrative Director, Eddie Schott, has been a major provider of tech support for the network. He works directly with each organization’s DMA (Director of Membership Administration) first and foremost to provide database/membership list training and supervision and membership list administrative training and supervision, but also everything from how to find the best computer deals to provding online giving for member organization. The DMA’s are a resource networked to each other and affiliated organizations.
